A live-coded set for a Politecnico di Milano exhibition of futuristic
projects, during Milan Design Week. A live ambient DJ set
on the audio, the sketch half-prepared and half-written in the room,
with the editor on screen the whole time.
1 / What it had to do
A Politecnico di Milano exhibition of futuristic projects, during
Milano Design Week. That is a room where people stand
still and look, which is the opposite of a dance floor:
nobody is facing away from the screen and nobody
is half-watching. The audio was a live ambient DJ set,
which is the harder case for reactive visuals — there is no
clear kick to hang everything on, so anything driven
by amplitude alone just breathes gently and stops
being interesting after two minutes.
2 / The idea
Exhibit the making rather than the made. Everything else
in that room was a finished object; the useful thing to put in
it was a process running in public, including the parts that do not
work first try. So the sketch is partly prepared and partly
written during the set, and the editor stays on screen
throughout — the image and the thing producing
the image visible at the same time.
3 / How it works
Written in Hydra and driven by the audio from the ambient set.
Nothing is a video file: every frame is generated
as it plays. Some of the code is prepared beforehand,
because a blank editor in front of an audience
is a performance about typing rather than about images,
and the rest is written and rewritten while it runs.
The editor stays visible next to what it is producing,
which is the difference between this reading as live
coding and reading as another VJ set.
