Tempio Festival,Berlin, Alte Münze
Tempio's own rooms scanned with Lidar and rebuilt as point
clouds, then interconnected and distorted. A looped animation,
projected, made to carry a building to another city.
1 / What it had to do
Tempio showing in Berlin, and the question of how you bring
a building somewhere else. Photographs of a venue
are photographs of a venue: they show a room and say
nothing about being in it. This had to carry the place itself,
and it had to work as a loop with nobody operating it.
2 / The idea
Scan it rather than photograph it. A Lidar scan is a measurement,
not a picture — it holds the actual geometry of the corridors
and the stones in the garden. Rebuilt as point clouds the place
stays recognisable while it stops being a photograph, and then
it can be pulled apart in ways a photograph would not survive.
3 / How it works
Lidar scans of Tempio's spaces, brought into TouchDesigner
and rebuilt as point clouds. The selection is deliberate:
the attributes that are particular to this building rather than
to any building — the architecture, the stones in the garden,
the corridors. Those get interconnected and distorted, and
the result is rendered as a looped animation and projected.
My own work rather than a commission.
